This seminar introduces students to the research field of military sociology. Three introductory online sessions will discuss the origins and functions of the military and will familiarise students with fundamental debates on military professionalism and culture. The in-person component of the course will build on these discussions and dig deeper into questions such as gender aspects, the experience of soldiering, the consequences of military missions for the organisation and its individual members and other contemporary debates. The selected readings discuss military institutions from across the globe and provide a comparative perspective on military sociology.
In order to successfully complete the seminar, students will have to give a presentation of approximately 15 minutes (topics and readings to be distributed during the course introduction) and write a short research paper on the topic of their presentation (4000-5000 words, to be submitted no later than Friday, 11 April 2025).
