This semester, we will be focusing on American politics; we will explore the U.S. presidency as a historical, political and cultural object. By studying texts political scientists and activists, as well as extracts from speeches and T.V. shows, we will try to understand the presidency as an institution, a political power but also as a social and cultural construct. The course will be adapted to the ongoing presidential campaign, with texts and activities related to its progress and results, and will have a particular focus on the audiovisual representations of the U.S. presidency.
Each week, students will be given texts to read, accompanied by vocabulary and reference notes as well as guiding questions. Vocabulary lists and grammar exercises will also be provided.
