This course aims at giving students an introduction
into US-American social movements from the 1960s and 1970s, through reading
major speeches and texts from the period. We will be tackling the Black Power
movement, Women’s liberation, LGBTQI+ rights, environmentalism, student
movements etc.. from a historical, political, and cultural perspective. One of
the aims of this class will also be to discuss current social movements and
protests using this historical background to analyze the shifting attitudes and
strategies of groups fighting for recognition, equality and dignity.
