Principles of International Security introduces students to the core concepts, theories, and debates that shape how states and other actors understand and respond to threats in the international system. The course examines traditional security concerns such as war, deterrence, and great-power competition alongside emerging challenges including terrorism, cyber conflict, economic coercion, and technological change. Through key cases and contemporary examples, students will explore why conflicts emerge, how states manage insecurity, and how the international system responds to threats. The course combines theoretical foundations with practical analysis of real-world security dilemmas. By the end, students will have a structured framework for understanding and analyzing international security issues.
