Modern Middle East History explores the major political, social, economic, and intellectual transformations that have shaped the Middle East from the late Ottoman period to the present. The course examines the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, the emergence of modern states, colonialism and nationalism, the Arab-Israeli conflict, political Islam, authoritarianism, and the region’s recurring wars and crises. Particular attention is given to how local actors interacted with and often contested external powers and institutions. Students will use historical analysis to understand how the region’s contemporary political and economic realities developed. The course ultimately provides a framework for interpreting the Middle East beyond simplified narratives and through the historical processes that continue to shape it.
