One of the main questions in anglophone political philosophy is how to make our political associations—the nation, society, the diverse communities that make up society, etc.—more inclusive. Examining contemporary anglophone political philosophy, this course will look at the way that the modern plurality of forms of life forces us to ask the questions of how to live together and how to resolve conflict through argumentative means. In order to understand the varieties of forms of life that make up the modern political landscape, we will examine different types of “positioned” thought, looking at critical race theory, queer theory, feminism, etc. These different theories ask that we reflect on the non-ideal structure of our society, one that contains real injustices, marginalization, and forms of exclusion, in order to better understand what is at stake in a shared public sphere.
